Is AI visibility the same as GEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of becoming a source those engines retrieve. AI visibility is the measurement. You can track visibility without doing GEO work; you cannot honestly claim GEO success without a visibility series.

Does Google Search Console report AI visibility?

Search Console includes AI Overviews and AI Mode in Web performance, and since 3 June 2026 offers Generative AI impression reports for a subset of sites. It does not replace ChatGPT or Perplexity sampling.

Why can I rank well and still have poor AI visibility?

AI visibility is the share of relevant prompts where ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, or similar systems mention or cite your brand. It is measured on a frozen prompt set, not guessed from a single chat.

AI visibility is how often answer engines mention or cite your brand. It is not a Google position, and it is not a traffic channel by itself.

AI visibility is how often, and how prominently, an answer engine mentions or cites your brand when people ask questions in your category.

Semrush’s GEO guide frames the same idea as competing to be part of the output, not only to rank in a list of links. Metrics they name: AI visibility, mentions, citations, share of voice. We use those words the same way. We do not invent a proprietary index number.

What it is not

Not position. Classic rank tracking still answers a different question. Keep it.
Not a GSC click. A citation without a click can still shape the shortlist a buyer hears.
Not “we asked ChatGPT once.” One session is a demo.

How to measure it without a fake score

Freeze 20–40 prompts a buyer would actually ask.
Sample ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google (AI Overviews / AI Mode) on a weekly cadence.
Code each run: cited, mentioned, absent.
Watch your time series on one tool. Do not mash Profound SOV into Peec SOV.
